COST OF THE ENERGY LOSSES FROM FAILED-OPEN MECHANICAL STEAM TRAPS FOR UTILITY APPLICATIONS

Variables (please complete)

Variable Value
Cost of 1 ton steam (Euro)
Total number of utility traps in the plant (pieces)
Average lifetime mechanical steam traps (years)
Average steam loss from a failed-open utility trap (kg/h) *
% failed-open **

* For utility steam traps, the steam loss from a failed-open trap depends on operating pressure and orifice size. Typical losses are between 8 kg/h and 270 kg/h for LP to HP as found on colleague websites, reports of the US Dep of Energy, as well as via the Napier Formula.

** Industry studies estimate that 70-80% of failing traps fail open. This happens because internal components degrade over time, allowing steam to pass.

Failing-closed impacts such as waterhammer, impaired heat transfer etc... are not taken in account.

Result: Energy loss from failed-open mechanical steam traps

Losses Value Unit
Total number of open failed mechanical steam traps 20 pieces
Steam loss per day 7.20 ton/day
Cost steam loss per day 216.00 Euro/day

Venturi steam traps cannot fail open, they are open, but well designed. This loss cannot happen with venturi steam traps.
